What the owners love?
We moved to West Mersea because we love seafood, love being right next to the sea but don’t like ‘Kiss Me Quick’ hats and crowds. Living in the Anchorage area, we can walk to the beach in a couple of minutes or walk around the island along the sea wall. Deciding to downsize from our big family house, we still wanted to stay in the road and enjoy the red squirrels who live in the trees at the back of our garden, so we built a smaller house next door. Our adult children lived with us then, so we extended our house to give us and them privacy by splitting the direction of the stairs. Schools are a big tick box for Mersea Island – we have the top three grammar schools in the country on the doorstep – Colchester Royal Grammar, Colchester Girls High and Chelmsford Grammar. Both my husband and I worked from home and had offices at either ends of the house. With work based in London, we could drive to the City in less than 80 minutes or take the main line train to Liverpool Street from Witham or Colchester in less than an hour. Enjoying retirement, we can’t think of a better place to be. Mersea Island is unique.
